Objective
Sold, by Patricia McCormick, is a young adult novel related as a series of vignettes from the point of view of 13-year-old Lakshmi, which entails her experiences in sexual slavery. The first vignette, “A Tin Roof,” establishes Lakshmi’s home and family in a small Nepali village in the Himalayan Mountains. In this lesson, students will identify the genre and style of Sold, and will research, analyze, and discuss the setting of Nepal.

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the first vignette of Section 1, titled “A Tin Roof.” Discuss the style of language in this excerpt. What does the author establish in this vignette? Where are the narrator and her mother? How is the setting described?
