1. What were Butchers' Association trips?

Queenie's parents ran a butchery. Every year the Butchers' Association would arrange an outing organized for the butchers, the butchers' wives and children, and the butchers' favorite workers. It was like a holiday.

2. What is the house like where Hortense goes to find her husband in Chapter 1?

Hortense arrives in England and her husband is not there to meet her. She gets a taxi and goes to the address where he is living. The house is one of the tallest that she has ever seen. It is shabby in a grand sort of way. There are pillars at the doorway twisted with an elaborate design. There are stained glass windows and some of them have been replaced by cardboard and tape.

3. How does Gilbert look when Hortense arrives in England?

When Hortense sees Gilbert after she arrives in England, he looks ragged and not like the man she remembers. When she last saw him he wore a suit, his hair was parted and shiny with grease, his shoes clean, his fingernails short, and his mustache neat. The man she sees standing in front of her is dark and rough. his shirt is not buttoned properly, and his shirt is tucked in the front and hanging out at the back. One of his shoelaces is undone.
