Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

In this chapter the reader is introduced to the three priests; Francisco Garrpe, Juan de Santa Marta and Sebastian Rodrigues.

The aim of this lesson is to examine their characters.

Lesson

1) Class discussion. Why do the the three priests want to find Ferriera? How important was Ferriera to them? Do the students think that the trip to Japan offers them excitement rather than anything spiritual? How do the students think the three priests will cope in Japan? Does any one of the three appear stronger and more capable than the others?

2) Divide the class into three groups. One group should write Rodrigues's character background, the second group should write Santa Marta's character background, and the final group should write Garrpe's character background.
