Short Essay Questions

1. When Benare says she forgot a book to read to pass the time before the show, Samant offers her the novel he has with him. Explain how this foreshadows what happens later in the play.

2. The character of “Rawte” is sick with the flu. Explain what his absence means for the other characters in the mock trial.

3. Benare asks the other characters to sit like children because she is going to tell them a story. Then, she recites half a poem to them before changing to a song. Describe the other characters’ responses to her and what her performance says about her character.

4. Kashikar repeatedly verbally abuses his wife and son throughout the course of the play. Describe specific examples of how Kashikar is abusive toward his wife.

5. When Ponkshe wants tea, Samant informs him there is no sugar. Explain what the absence of sugar symbolizes in the play.

With the exception of Samant, none of the characters in the play are particularly nice to one another. Select and describe specific examples of how Kashikar treats his wife.

Essay Topic 2

When Benare talks about her teaching, she says “people are jealous.” Do you think jealousy is a motivation for the other characters’ bullying of Benare? Explain why.

Essay Topic 3

Many of the characters speak repeatedly about the difference between right and wrong, morality, and social responsibility. One of them is a social worker, and another is a lawyer. However, they treat Benare – and one another – with a lack of compassion and empathy. Explore the disconnect between the characters’ public views on morality and their private practice of how they treat other people.
