Short Essay Questions

1. Samant enters carrying a lock and key and asks Benare if she caught her finger in the lock when he sees she is sucking on her finger. How does this foreshadow what happens later in the play?

2. Benare talks about what she was like as a child. Contrast her description of her childhood self to the way she is in the play.

3. Benare asks the other characters to sit like children because she is going to tell them a story. Then, she recites half a poem to them before changing to a song. Describe the other characters’ responses to her and what her performance says about her character.

4. In the opening scene, Benare sings a song in English about a “sweetheart” who “likes my looks” and “wants to marry me.” More than an innocent children’s song, the song may provide insights into Benare’s character and situation. Explain how the song foreshadows what is revealed about Benare later in the play.

5. In the opening scene, Benare tells Samant about Kashikar, Mrs. Kashikar, Rokde, Sukhatme, Ponkshe, and Damle without naming them directly. Describe the tone with which Benare speaks about the other characters.

6. In the opening scene, Samant calls Benare a “schoolmarm,” but she appears to take offense at this because she corrects them. Explain why Benare would take offense to being called a “schoolmarm.”

7. Because Damle missed the last train that would arrive in time for the mock trial, he will not be able to participate in the mock trial. Explain what that means for Benare and the other characters.

8. Benare has a habit of teasing Ponkshe. Select and describe specific examples of how she makes fun of him.

9. The Kashikars are late because Kashikar wanted to buy a garland for Mrs. Kashikar’s hair. Explain what that says about the state of their marriage.

10. When Sukhatme teases Benare about her “husband,” what is her response and why?

Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Much is said in the play about mothers and mothering, but with differing definitions. Discuss how motherhood is defined from different characters’ points of view.

Essay Topic 2

Many of the characters speak repeatedly about the difference between right and wrong, morality, and social responsibility. One of them is a social worker, and another is a lawyer. However, they treat Benare – and one another – with a lack of compassion and empathy. Explore the disconnect between the characters’ public views on morality and their private practice of how they treat other people.

Essay Topic 3

With the exception of Samant, none of the characters in the play are particularly nice to one another. Select and describe specific examples of how Kashikar treats his wife.
