Clarice Starling is an up and coming FBI trainee. She is called by the Section Chief of the Behavioral Sciences department to help in a serial killer investigation. Clarice will face many challenges in this investigation, the largest being the challenges associated with being a female in a male dominated career path. The objective of this lesson is to explore the ways Clarice is challenged as a woman and how she handled those challenges.

Lesson

1. Writing assignment: Choose two male characters who interact with Clarice. Compare/contrast the ways they treat Clarice. Do they show her respect? Are assumptions made about her relationships with other male characters? Why do you think it is assumed that Clarice must be sleeping with Crawford to get such an assignment? Cite examples from the text to support your argument.

2. Classroom discussion: Have the students separate into small groups...
