Objective

Objective: Act 1, Scene 1 The Shrike begins in the psychiatric ward of the hospital; this is where a majority of the play will take place. This lesson is about the atmosphere of the hospital, how the patients are treated there, and the significance found in the signs of limited freedom.

1) Class Discussion: What is the class' initial impression of the hospital in the first scene of The Shrike? Why? How do they feel about the way the patients are being treated there? What examples lead the class to form their opinions?

2) Writing and Analysis: Have the class take 15 minutes and write down 3 examples from Act 1, Scene 1 of the patients' general lack of freedom in the hospital. Afterward, talk about the answers and which ones are the most significant.
