Chapter 1

"Shiloh: A Novel by Shelby Foote" recounts one battle of the American Civil War through many soldiers on both sides of the battlefield. The author is not only a writer, he was also known as a Civil War expert. Today, students will begin their study of Shiloh by learning more about its author, Shelby Foote.

Lesson

1) Small Groups: Assign groups to research these topics: the author's childhood, education, writings, occupations, family, and awards/organization memberships. Have each group compile their information into a handout for everyone to use as reference as they share their information with the class.

2) Class Activity: Using the information from small group activity #1, create a time line as a class. Work from the author's birth, to present day, noting and discussing all important events on the time line. What can be determined from the time line? What types of influences might...
