Part One—Woodstock: The Old Lodge

· Following an epigraph attributed to Elizabeth I of England and the Table of Contents, the first chapter begins with Diana and Matthew arriving at their destination uncomfortably and assessing their situation and condition.
· The room where they arrive in the Old Lodge at Woodstock, England, in 1590 is described, and Diana exults in having successfully traversed time.
· Matthew confronts Marlowe, who is halfheartedly skulking about and expresses surprise at Matthew’s appearance; Diana considers him, and her regard for Marlowe begins to drop quickly as they are formally introduced and converse.
· A pair of servitors, the vampires Pierre and Françoise, enter and receive orders to see to Diana, who is identified as Matthew’s wife, with the implications of that status...
