Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

In class, you discussed the novel's setting of a shopping channel. How does the setting affect or influence the novel's plot developments? What points in the novel are highly impacted by the setting? What points would be similar if the novel had another main setting, such as a television news network or a customer call center for a cell phone company?

Essay Topic 2

In class you discussed the structure of the novel (chapter lengths, internal divisions of the chapters, etc.). The chapters were simply numbered with no titles. Why might the author have decided to use numbers and no titles? What are the benefits and disadvantages of this set-up for the reader? You may find it helpful, when structuring your response, to select one or two chapters and create titles for them, and use them as examples. (Sample: "If Burroughs had titled the first chapter 'Introduction,' one benefit for the reader would be...")
