Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

The novel often mentions beverages when describing scenes. Examine what beverages are mentioned and what purpose that serves. Purposes will be different in different scenes. For example, the latte that Miguel spills on Max has a very different function than the sip of Lemon Zinger tea Trish has in the staff room.

Essay Topic 2

What is Bebe's approach to selling items on Sellevision, and why does it work? Compare Bebe's style of selling to that of another character, such as Peggy Jean or Trish. Can you think of any current television hosts or celebrities that employ the same approaches?

Essay Topic 3

In class, you discussed the novel's setting of a shopping channel. How does the setting affect or influence the novel's plot developments? What points in the novel are highly impacted by the setting? What points would be similar if the novel had another main setting, such as a television news network or a customer call center for a cell phone company?
