In Chapter 1, Robert Irwin grew up in southwest Los Angeles, attending high school in the mid-Forties. It was an artistically rich place in which to grow up. This lesson will discuss LA at this time and Irwin's childhood.

Small Group Activity: Describe Irwin's childhood. What is the connection between his childhood and West Coast living?

Class Discussion: Discuss the students' responses. How does Irwin's childhood and L.A. compare to your own childhood and community? What might be the reasons for these similarities and differences?

Individual Activity: Research a community in the U.S. at the time in which Irwin was a child, as well as today. What was life like in this community? How has it changed over time? What has caused these changes? Are these positive changes? Why or why not?
