Objective

Objective: Chapter 1 introduces us to an unnamed captain aboard an unnamed ship beginning a new journey as captain for the first time. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the main character and his attributes in order to gain a better understanding of the person the author is presenting.

1. For class discussion: Who is the story's main character? What do we know about him? How does the author present him?

2. Groups: Have the students break into groups of three or four and discuss: The narrator in this book is going through some major life changes. What are they? How does it make him feel? What is he searching for at this point in the story?
3. Individual: Create an in class journal entry on how easy it is for you to relate to the narrator. Do you feel this is a character who anyone can relate to...
