Money

This is a source of happiness in the novel and a source of stress, greed, and anxiety. It is something that all the characters understand is a necessity in life but realize there are other ways that make life meaningful and joyous.

Hospital Bed

This represents Saul's sickness and foreshadows his eventual death. Toward the end of the novel and Saul's life, Kirk sets this up in an effort to show love and compassion to his dying former lover. The building of this represents Kirk's undying support.

Travel

This is something that many characters in the novel do to find deeper meanings about life and love. For Abby, it gives her the chance to start over and gain a fresh perspective after discovering her husband's second family. For Tara, it gives her both freedom and the yearning to return to a place she has missed.
