President Truman

"Scoundrel Time" surrounds the McCarthy era and gives insight into the Blacklist and House Committee, for which President Truman helped lay the foundation. The objective of this lesson is to better understand the conflicts in "Scoundrel Time," and discuss President Truman.

Lesson

1) Data Collection: Ask students to share that they know about President Truman and spend time developing an explanation of his presidency, particularly in regards to the Blacklist and House Committee

2) Class Discussion: What role did Truman play in post-World War II America? Why was he an appealing president during this time? What are the long-term effects you can still see of Truman's today? How would you classify Truman's presidency? What was it based on?

3) Independent Writing: How is the perspective given in the Introduction consistent or contradictory to what you have heard about President Truman?

4) Homework: In preparation for the next lesson...
