1. How does Chapter 1 of SANCTUARY begin?

Chapter 1 begins with a man named Popeye meeting another man named Benbow at a stream somewhere in rural Mississippi. It is May. Popeye stands on one side of the stream staring at Benbow, who at this point is a stranger. Benbow drinks from the spring. Neither man says anything. The men spend the next two hours staring at each other.

2. Who is Benbow and what is his objective for needing to cross the spring?

Benbow introduces himself as a lawyer from Kinston. Benbow's only goal is to get to Jefferson by dark. Benbow tells Popeye that he cannot keep him by the spring with no way out as he is not a criminal. Benbow says perhaps he will make a break for it and run. Popeye advises against it.

3. Who is Ruby and how does Benbow meet her?

Popeye and Benbow begin to walk together and soon approach Old Frenchman Place, a plantation. There are three men on the porch, along with a dog. The group eyes Benbow suspiciously. Popeye introduces Benbow as "Professor." Popeye and Benbow go inside the house. Benbow meets Ruby Lamar, a twenty-something woman who serves as the cook. Popeye fills Ruby in on information about Benbow. Ruby becomes angry with Benbow, repeatedly calling him a bastard.
