· Salvatore would lie on the beach in the mornings periodically going for a swim.

· Salvatore only wore shoes on Sundays.

· Salvatore’s father “was a fisherman who owned his own little vineyard and Salvatore acted as nursemaid to his younger brothers” (2).

· Salvatore made sure his brothers did not go out too far into the ocean and that they ate lunch, however little the meal may be.

· Soon Salvatore fell in love with a girl from the Grande Marina.

· Her eyes are described as “forest pools” (2).

· Salvatore and the girl were engaged, but he had to complete his military service...
