Objective: Scene 1 This scene introduces us to Maid Joan and gives the reader a first look into the mysteries surrounding her. She is an enigma, and each person's opinion of her seems to be slightly different The objective of this lesson is to explore the character of Joan.

1. Essay: The scene begins with Robert's anger about not having eggs for his breakfast. The steward blames Joan for the lack of eggs. Why does the steward blame Joan? Does Joan's presence seem to have an otherworldly effect on her surroundings? Does this seem realistic, or do you think there is a more plausible explanation for the hens not laying eggs? Write a one page paper exploring this concept and be prepared to share with the class.
