Objective

Objective: Frame Story "Rumble Fish" is a frame story. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the frame story's structure in "Rumble Fish."

1. Class Discussion: What is a frame story? How is this an effective means of telling the story? What is the author's purpose for using a frame story? What other structures could the author have used?

2. Class Debate: Divide the class into two groups of students. Have each group elect a spokesperson/representative for their group. Post the following question on the board, overhead, or projection screen: Is the author's use of a story frame to introduce the character and build suspense effective? Each group's spokesperson should state whether or not the group agrees or disagrees. Students should use the text to come up with reasons to support their positions. Present the reasons to the class in a debate.
