Objective

Objective: The author uses family stories as one research method for writing this book. The objective of this lesson is to bring awareness to methods of research.

1. For class discussion: Ask students how the author comes to know about the life of Kunta in Africa. (Most will know from the television series that the author is a descendant of Kunta.) Even if the author heard of Kunta's life through family stories, would that have been sufficient to present this level of detail? Where else could he have obtained information?

2. For a project: Have students write a brief story set in some other time and place. How do they research details about that place?

3. For a project: Have students create a setting for a story. The body of the story is irrelevant, the purpose of this exercise is only to create a setting. If some students have trouble...
