· Following dedications and an epigraph, One begins with Maryse looking down at a Klan rally, describing it in detail and musing on its openness: “I hear them first Klans after the Civil War hid behind pillowcases and flour sacks to do their mischief” (11).
· The festive trappings of the Klan rally are detailed, as is the presence of monsters among the people.
· Maryse starts as Sadie settles in to open fire from the rooftop, and she assesses her position.
· Chef opines about her wartime experiences, and discussion ensues of how the three will proceed.
