Objective

The title of the book is "Hunger of Memory." In this lesson, students consider what that title means. They use that as a starting point for a discussion about who the author is and why he might be writing the book.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: Write the word "hunger" on the board. Ask students to brainstorm what they think of when they hear that word and write their ideas on the board. Then write the word "memory" on the board and repeat the process. Ask students what they think "hunger of memory" means. Ask students if that title makes sense for an autobiographical book. Why or why not? Based on the title, what predictions can they make about the author? Is he happy with his life?

2) Author biography: Provide students with a short biography on Richard Rodriguez and ask them to read it. Based on that description...
