Choose one of the characters in the story, and describe how the author develops the character traits throughout the plot. Explain how the development of the character adds to the plot and how it unfolds.

Essay Topic 2

Explain the view of a woman's role during the 1800s. Be sure to discuss how men treated women and how men viewed women. Also include a discussion of how women were to treat men during this time in history. Then explain why this understanding of history is crucial to understanding the interactions between the members of the Penn family.

Essay Topic 3

Of the four main characters (Father, Mother, Nanny, and Sammy), pick one, and explain her or his struggle with social convention during this time. Does the character fight the convention or succumb to it? What is the motivation for this character to follow social convention? Is the motivation purely to go along with what everyone else is doing, or is there some other reason given in the story that provides motivation to make the choices the character does?
