Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

When Father says that he didn't know how strongly Mother felt about the house, the reader senses irony. Is that truly an example of irony? Or was Father using that as an excuse? It seems incomprehensible that Father would not know how she feels, but perhaps that is an indication that he really didn't respect what she has to say. Explain your thoughts regarding this scene and the use of irony.

Essay Topic 2

Write an essay comparing and contrasting Sammy at the beginning of the story to the end of the story. Why does the author need to have him change? Is the character change necessary? Would the plot have remained the same without the change in him?

Essay Topic 3

Write about the themes in the story. The primary theme is that of how women were viewed and how they were supposed to respond men. Do you see any other themes in the story? What are they? How do they add to the primary theme?
