Objective

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "What five things do you know about the setting thus far for _The Red Pony_?" Collect their responses.

2) Divide students into pairs. Have each student discuss what five items they wrote about in their focusing exercise. Then, with the list of 10 each pair comes up with, have students write what they can reasonably assume about the setting from these "facts." (E.g. the area seems a bit rural, which may mean that neighbors know each other and help each other out).
