Objective

Objective: Part 1 In the first part of the story, the narrator introduces us to the Hawthorne family. The object of this lesson is to learn about the Hawthorne family.

1) Class discussion: How many people are in the Hawthorne family? Who are they? What are their ages? Who do we learn has recently died as the story opens?

2) Group discussion: Divide the class into five groups. Assign each group one of the five Hawthorne family members and ask the group to list everything the narrator reveals about their assigned character. Include the ages of the family members, physical characteristics, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and jobs. Share the information with the rest of the class. Which character do we know the most about? Which character do we know the least about?

3) Individual: The narrator provides details about each member of the family but very little information about the family...
