By the first chapter she is settled in California. The time period is in the mid 1800s, an important era in America's history.

1) Research what life was like in the mid 1800s in California. Considering Angel's profession, what would life be like for her in this time period? Find out what travel conditions would have been for Angel when she came to California from New England; use a globe to trace the route Angel may have traveled.
