Lesson 1 (from Part 1, Chapter 1 | Part 1, Chapter 2)

Objective

Part 1, Chapter 1 | Part 1, Chapter 2

In these chapters, the narrator recalls his first experience with the woman who "rescued" him when he got sick in the street. The woman showed him compassion, which the first lesson will discuss.

Lesson

1) Writing assignment, "Good Samaritan experience:" Each student will write a short essay about a time when they were shown compassion from a person they didn't know, and each should explain how he/she felt. The essay should compare or contrast the narrator's feelings with their own.

2) Discussion in pairs: Each student will have a partner. Ask them together to draw conclusions about how the narrator feels from the woman's compassion. They should also try to identify any instances of foreshadowing as to what this compassion might mean for the future of the narrator.

3) Class discussion: Pose the following questions to the class as a whole: Should the narrator...
