1. Describe Dick.

Dick is a young boy of fourteen who earns his own income by shining shoes. He amuses his customers with the stories he tells and usually spends what he earns on entertainment at night. He is generous and helps Johnny Nolan, his friend, by buying Johnny breakfast when he has no money.

2. Why is Dick fired from his job in Chapter 1?

Dick's customer pays him with a two dollar bill and tells him to go to a store for change. When Dick does, the store clerk tells him that the bill is counterfeit. Dick tells his customer what happened with the store clerk, and the gentleman returns to the store with Dick. The clerk had switched the good bill that Dick had given him with a bad bill, and for this he is fired by the store owner.

Dick is always alert to any business opportunity. When he overhears a conversation between Mr. Whitney and his nephew Frank standing outside the hotel, he offers his services as a tour guide.
