FRIENDSHIP - When the novel opens, it becomes quite clear that Johnny Wheelwright is friends with Owen Meany even though the rest of the kids tease him mercilessly. The objective of this lesson is to explore the friendship between the two boys and discover the meaning of this relationship for them as individuals.

Lesson

1.) Class activity. As a class, create a list of reasons why Johnny Wheelwright may have befriended Owen Meany even though it seemed that no other kids liked him.

2.) Class activity. Compare/Contrast the characteristics of Owen Meany and Johnny Wheelwright. What characteristics might attract a friend. Are there any similarities/differences in the comparison?
