Objective

Much of the novel takes place in the Congo. Many students will be unfamiliar with this country and its culture. The objective of this lesson is to have students learn more about the country so they will have a greater context in which to put the novel.

Lesson

1. Assign students to several groups and have them research various aspects of the Congo (such as customs, language, history, climate, etc.) Have the students give a five minute presentation to the class about their particular research topic.

2. Have each student prepare a poster board presentation on the Congo. Topics for the poster board could include language, climate, flora and fauna, history, etc.
