Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the use of paratext in Playground. How the text appears on the page and what appears on the page other than text change how what happens in the novel is received and understood. The paratext Powers’s novel deploys therefore compels some attention.

Class Discussion: Consider the things you have read. What other than words do we see in a text? How do we see the words? Does it make the words easier or harder to deal with? Does it make the reading easier or harder? What other information does it convey? How does it do so? Does as much hold true for Playground? How or how not?
Group Activity: Guide student discussion through consideration of such things as typeface, spacing, and type-formatting in the first three sections of the novel (1-4). What parts of the text...
