The story takes place in the frontier state of Kansas. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about the Kansas that the pioneer women knew.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about what Kansas frontier life would have been like for the women who came west as homesteaders. What can the students offer about any previous study they have done about this time period and geography? What are the perceptions of Kansas pioneer life that may have been altered after having read this book? What did they expect? What surprised them? What do they think about pioneering days after they have viewed it through the eyes of the women who actually lived it? Discuss.
