Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

The history of the Native American people probed to give deeper insight into the reason why Annawake was so determined to return Turtle to her heritage. Choose two characters who suffered because of their Native American heritage, and explain how their suffering prompted Annawake to fight for Turtle's return.

Essay Topic 2

When the reader is first introduced to Annawake's character, it is through the filtered voice of her secretary Jinny. Describe the way that Jinny views Annawake, and compare / contrast that to Annawake's own view of herself. Finally, discuss whether Jinny's view of Annawake at the beginning of the novel was an accurate assessment, and why.

Essay Topic 3

Both Alice and Taylor define themselves as being strong-willed women that do not need a man to survive, but both women's opinions of themselves change throughout the course of the novel. Describe the viewpoint that mother and daughter shared about men at the beginning of the novel, and describe how their views about men gradually changed by the end of the novel.
