1. Discuss Nick Buckley, the woman Poirot meets in the beginning of the story.

Magdala "Nick" Buckley is an attractive young woman and owner of End House, the Buckley family home. It is alleged that someone is trying to kill Miss Buckley. Buckley is secretly engaged to Michael Seton, an airman.

2. What does Poirot figure out about Nick and the death of Maggie?

Poirot learns that Nick was never a target. Nick had planned to cause a murderous "accident" in which Maggie would die instead of her so that she could claim End House as well as Michael Seton. Poirot also discovers that Maggie's death was set up by Nick.

3. Explain the opening scene with Poirot and Hastings at the hotel.

Poirot and Hastings have arrived at the Majestic Hotel in the seaside town of St. Loo. The men discuss Poirot's previous case and his retirement. Hastings hopes Poirot will consider coming out of retirement. Poirot has been tempted but says he enjoys the retired lifestyle.
