Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine colonialism, and how it tended to destroy the identity of Indians and African slaves. Palmares takes place in the late 1600s when Brazil was a Portuguese colony. The Europeans who came to the country imposed their religion and customs on the Indians and the African slaves.

Lesson

Class Discussion: How do the Indians and enslaved Africans lose their identity in "Almeydita"? To what extent are they allowed to keep their own customs, names, and ways of doing things by the Portuguese colonists? How is their sense of culture and place destroyed or damaged? How do Almeyda, her mother, and her grandmother try to keep their sense of identity? How do Acaiba and Grandmother help Almeyda keep a sense of identity? Why is Almeyda able to keep her identity when so many lose theirs?
