Zemblan Inspiration

Find one fact about Russian history that is similar to the history of Zembla as told by Charles Kinbote. Zembla is a fictitious country that may or may not exist in the reality of the novel Pale Fire. Since Nabokov is Russian it is quite possible the country of Zembla may be based on part of the old Soviet Union.
