The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the biography of novelist Ama Ata Aidoo and consider consider what inspired her to write the novel. The female Aidoo was born in Ghana and served as Minister of Education, giving her special insights into the education structures whereby students travelled on scholarship, such as the main character, of Our Sister Killjoy, Sissie.

Class Discussion: What do you notice about the name Ama Ata Aidoo? Where is the author from? Where did she attend school? What other books has she published? How do you think the details of her life make her especially equipped to write this novel?
