Objective

Objective: Part 1, Chapter 1 Several of the main characters are introduced in this first chapter. Discuss the importance of character and character traits to the development of a plot.

1) Divide the students into groups of four or five. Have each group do one of the following:

Write character sketches of the main characters of the novel based on information provided in the first paragraph.
Write character sketches of each other based on only what someone might learn within the confines of the classroom.
Write character sketches of their family members based on how they would fit within the plot of the novel.

2) Discuss the definition of character and how first impressions tend to define a person.
3) Have the students act out the traits of a person they admire.
