Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine how the setting for the plot is developed in the novel. Students will examine how characters are introduced and how past events create a sense of foreboding at Bayview High. References to About That and to Simon's death also create a sense of dread while media hype escalates the tone.

Lesson

Class Discussion: Who are Knox, Maeve, and Phoebe? What do we know about their friends and families? What happened 18 months back? What game was responsible for Simon's death? Who plays the game? How is an atmosphere of fear developed in the initial chapters?

Group Discussion: Divide the class into groups and have each group focus on one of the main characters and their family. How are appearances of a normal life belied by the thoughts of the character? How do these thoughts create a sense of suspense...
