Writer's often write about their own life experiences. In this lesson, students will learn about the life of the author Miles Connolly and analyze what experiences in his life led him to write "Mr. Blue."

Lesson

1. Read and take notes: Have students read the About the Author section in the back of the book. While reading, have students create a time line of major events in Connolly's life.

2. Partner activity: In partners, have students analyze why Connolly chose to set the novel in Boston and New York. What experiences led him to be familiar with these places? What other cities could Connolly have set the novel in?

3. Class discussion: Facilitate a class discussion on the author Miles Connolly by asking the following questions:

• What does the reader know about his upbringing?

• What does the reader know about his education?

• What does the reader know...
