Objective
Objective: Play One, Act One, Scene One, Part One. The objective of this lesson is exploring how Mourning Becomes Electra is based on three classical Greek tragedies -The Oresteia by Aeschylus, Electra by Sophocles, and Electra by Euripides.
1. Individual Assignment: Using the internet and library, research the history and plots of The Oresteia by Aeschylus, Electra by Sophocles, and Electra by Euripides. Write a summary based on your research for each play. How do these plays approach the same story from different perspectives?
2. Writing Assignment: Answer in a brief essay: What seems to be the overall theme emerging from all three plays? How can this theme be translated to a Civil War setting?
3. Class Discussion: Discuss as a class how Mourning Becomes Electra starts in a similar fashion to The Oresteia. What parallels are found between the two opening scenes? How is the structure of the two...
