Objective

One of this novel's central themes is duty - how it is taken on and what this means to each character and to the setting as a whole. Today's objective is to discuss the role of duty in modern life as well as in the novel.

Lesson

1. Have each student create their own definition of duty. What does it mean?

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss what they feel their duties in life are right now. Who creates these duties? Are they duties that the students want to follow? Why or why not?

3. As a class, have students discuss how they would feel to be told they need to get pregnant or do something else similarly challenging. If they didn't have any say in the matter, how would this make them feel? What would the students have done if they were faced with this task?
