When Kafuku asks Misaki Watari if Oba had explained to her why Kafuku had suddenly needed a driver, Misaki Watari answers Kafuku, thereby communicating to the reader the events that had precipitated Kafuku's need for a driver. She says that Kafuku had been involved in a minor traffic accident, had been found to be under the influence of a small amount of alcohol, and had been told that glaucoma was negatively affecting his eyesight. The management at Kafuku's current theater had hushed up the alcohol infraction, but had been unwilling to chance that their leading man might get hurt in another accident due to his poor eyesight.

The narrator goes to great lengths to ensure that the reader's vision of Misaki Watari is a detailed one, providing many details about her physical appearance. Misaki Watari has large, dark brown eyes that look at the world with suspicion and "large, protruding ears...like satellite dishes" (8). She wears a too-large men's herringbone jacket and Converse sneakers. Her hair is pulled back "out of her way" (4) and there is something "off-putting" (5) about her face.
