• This book was written from the first-person perspective, alternating between Ben's and Mike's voices, and in a mix of past and present tenses.

• Part I begins from Ben's perspective and is written in the present tense.

• In Chapter 1, Mike, Ben's boyfriend, is leaving for Osaka, Japan because his estranged father Eiju is terminally ill and Mike has decided to go see him before he dies.

• Mike's mother, Mitsuko, is flying into Houston to visit Mike but will stay with Ben, whom she has never met, while Mike is in Japan.

• Mitsuko and Eiju are long divorced.

• Ben cannot understand why Mike is leaving, because Mike has never had any affection for his father, but Mike feels he must make amends with his father before...
