· Following a dedication and an epigraph, a section titled “Cyrus Shams” begins with a character of the same name contemplating his situation and a seeming revelation.
· The circumstances of the revelation and their contrast with other, more notable instances of revelation, are related.
· Presented with the revelation and lying amid his filth, Cyrus must make a choice.
· Chapter One begins with Cyrus preparing for work, his job described in some detail.
· The need for Cyrus’s job is also noted as he goes through several cycles of work, as is his being suited to the same.
· Also noted is the discomfort Zee has with Cyrus’s work: “Zee made a little face, then said, ‘It just doesn’t seem healthy, Cyrus’” (10).
