Objective: Alex Haley is one of America's most influential black authors. The aim of this lesson is learn about Haley's life and work.

1) With the students, brainstorm what they already know about Alex Haley. What influence has he had on popular culture and, in particular, African American culture? What other books has he written? Do his books tend to be similar in their styles and themes? Divide the students into pairs and ask them to research Haley's life and write a short biography. End the lesson by comparing the students' work. How much of Haley's personality and style do you think is within The Autobiography of Malcolm X?
