Chapter 1 opens with an attack with racial motives. Chapter 2 describes the reasons for the new black housing development, with racial undertones and segregation. This lesson focuses on racial violence and segregation.

1) Class Discussion: What are the titles of Chapters 1 and 2? How does each title give you an idea of what is to come? Having read both chapters, do the titles fit? How does Chapter 1 open? What is going on? Who is involved? What happens with McCall and his family in 1964, according to Chapter 2?

2) Writing Assignment: In 3 or more pages, compare and contrast the violent teen beating of the white boy in Chapter 1 with the clashes between Cavalier Manor and Academy Park residents.
