• The following version of this book was used to create this lesson plan: Nazemian, Abdi. Like a Love Story. HarperCollins, New York, 2019.
• This book was written from a range of different characters' first-person perspectives and in the present tense, which will be noted in each section. Each chapter is labeled not by number, but by the name of the person narrating it.
• The first chapter, "Reza," begins in the present tense in 1989 in New York City with Reza, a 17-year-old Iranian-Canadian who has just moved to New York City with his mother, Mina, who has married a man named Abbas who is wealthy.
• Reza is unsettled and so unhappy with his appearance that he rips his own braces off, causing himself to bleed.
• Mina, not wanting to tell Abbas about Reza's actions, secretly takes him to an orthodontist she finds in the phone book...
