Objective

"Lieutenant Hornblower" is an example of Nautical Historical Fiction. For this lesson, you will introduce the topic of Genre to the students and lecture about the characteristics of writing that constitute historical fiction. The objective of this lesson is to discuss and learn more about what the Historical Fiction genre entails.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: "Lieutenant Hornblower" is an example of the genre, historical fiction. Open up the following questions for class discussion: What is genre? What do you think of when you hear the words "historical fiction"? What period of history is the context for this story? Why should we read historical fiction?

2) Groups: Break up the class into groups of four and have them discuss the following question: What is historical and what is fiction about "Lieutenant Hornblower"?

3) Individual: Write a 300-350 word paragraph about what you now know concerning the genre of Historical Fiction...
