Objective

Chapter 1: As the story begins, the Logan family is visiting friends and the main topic of conversation is TJ Avery's arrest for the murder of a white man. The boy claims that two white boys did the crime. Russell is introduced. He is wearing an Army uniform and the discussion turns to whether it is safe for him to wear it on the train back to Indiana.

There is a common theme of racism throughout the story.
