Objective

Objective: When the unnamed narrator talks about how he did not go to the trial, he also says that he knew the verdict before the jury even decided. Today's objective is to discuss the value of experiencing something versus not doing something because you expect it to be a certain way.

1. Have each student share with the class whether or not they would have gone to the trial of Jefferson. Why or why not?

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss events in their life they may not have gone to because they thought they already knew how they were going to turn out. In retrospect, were they right or wrong?

3. As a class, have students argue whether or not Grant should have attended the trial. Would it have made a difference? Does the class feel that Grant felt guilty about not going? Why or why not?
