Essay Topics
Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
Why does Leah at first think she could date Garrett? Think about how in the beginning of the novel, she has Garrett's sweatshirt on and thinks about the idea of being someone's girlfriend (32). How does the novel show that outside expectations shape how we perceive and think about ourselves? How does it shape what the characters want, desire, or think is possible? Follow Leah's journey, and choose at least two other characters to incorporate into your exploration.
Essay Topic 2
Goodbyes, endings, and new beginnings of college, adulthood, and life are themes in the novel. Simon says, "'I don't want to leave him or you or Abby or any of you guys.' His voice catches. 'I don't know anyone in Philly. I don't know how people do this'" (239). How do characters in the novel transition from not knowing how to do something to being able to do it? How do they cope with this change, and what allows them to accept the coming change? Choose three characters to write an analysis about what the novel is saying about endings, acceptance, and allowing change to take place.
Essay Topic 3
At the end of the novel, Leah says, "This is not my perfect prom night, and it's not the happy ending I pictured. It's not an ending at all. But it's mine" (336). By what she says, and what happens in the novel, what does it mean to have a happy ending or a perfect night? How does the vision, such as Leah's mom discussed earlier, connect to reality? Think about the ending of the novel, and discuss how this ending, if not fully happy, is entirely Leah's, and how this could be better than happiness.
