Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
After Morgan's comment, Abby says she forgives, but is not sure if she trusts Morgan any more (257). Leah in the beginning of the novel does not want to forgive Martin, and later does not want to forgive Morgan. How is forgiveness shown to work in the novel across many levels? Consider how the conflict and resolution is spread over many chapters with the characters discussing it several times What does forgiveness mean, and what does it resolve? Is forgiveness an end or a process? Use both these characters and one other character for your argument.
Essay Topic 2
Friendship, friend groups, and friends together, make up the core of the novel. Look at the friendships represented in the novel, why those friendships exist, and what different supports those friendships provide. Choose at least four friend dynamics to discuss. Finally, what is the novel showing about the importance of friendship? How does friendship allow growth and support through difficult times? How do friends hold one another up for the betterment of everyone?
Essay Topic 3
Abby and Nick's breakup resonates throughout the novel, making room for new possibilities of romance, while both Abby and Nick, as well as their friends, cope with the fallout. How does this breakup impact different characters? Choose at least four characters to write about their feelings about the breakup. Use this to discuss, how does a breakup have to do with more than just the characters in a relationship? And how do the way characters feel or think show a complex picture of relationships and breakups, and why people stay in relationships? Consider also how appearance factors into these choices.
