Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Goodbyes, endings, and new beginnings of college, adulthood, and life are themes in the novel. Simon says, "'I don't want to leave him or you or Abby or any of you guys.' His voice catches. 'I don't know anyone in Philly. I don't know how people do this'" (239). How do characters in the novel transition from not knowing how to do something to being able to do it? How do they cope with this change, and what allows them to accept the coming change? Choose three characters to write an analysis about what the novel is saying about endings, acceptance, and allowing change to take place.

Essay Topic 2

In the beginning of the novel, Leah is nervous about the ending of high school, and feels like she can not cope. By the end, she tells Simon she misses him already (305). How does her response to Simon in the end show a change of heart? How does Leah's decision have to do with what has happened in the novel? What has changed her for the better and made it possible for her to accept endings, and what is the novel showing by this about what makes us resilient for change?

Essay Topic 3

Morgan makes a racist comment about Abby, and Leah calls her out on it to the detriment of their friendship for some time. Look at this situation from two angles. First, how does Morgan's response and defensiveness show an ally's reaction gone wrong? How does forgiveness and reconciliation take place after these kinds of racist comments for the characters involved? And how does the handling and response to the situation on many levels show ways, good or bad, that these kinds of comments can be dealt with? Which characters do you think acted right in this situation, and how do you think they could have improved?
